Even if you practice good oral hygiene at home and get regular dental checkups, it is possible that you could still experience a dental emergency. An impact to your face, a slip and fall, a car accident, or an infection could lead to a sudden problem. A dental emergency could also result from a lost or damaged restorative device like a filling, crown, or bridge.

Common Dental Emergencies

Some dental emergencies occur quite often, and these include lost caps, crowns, and fillings. You may be able to use a temporary, over-the-counter dental wax to fill in the area overnight until the dentist can see you in the morning. A severe toothache is another common dental emergency. You may be able to take an over-the-counter pain reliever and be seen within 24 hours by an emergency dentist. Getting a tooth knocked out is another situation that requires urgent care to prevent pain and infection. Care should be received within an hour of losing the tooth.

What to Do If You Experience a Dental Emergency

Call an emergency dentist as soon as you are able. It may possible to be seen immediately. The sooner you can get to a dentist, the better the chance of saving your tooth. If it is not possible for the dentist to see you right away, you may be advised to go to the emergency room or an urgent care center for antibiotics or a pain reliever until you’re able to get your tooth looked at. You may receive instructions such as applying heat or ice to your cheek or taking some ibuprofen. These strategies can help keep you more comfortable until the dentist can treat your tooth.
